Studio portrait of soldiers of the 18th Battalion. Standing in the middle of the group with a moustache, is 5894 Private (Pte) George Samuel Willis, of Gosford, NSW. A railway porter prior to enlisting in May 1916, Pte Willis embarked from Sydney with the 16th Reinforcements on board HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 7 October 1916. He was killed in action in France on 3 October 1918. Pte Willis was 37 years of age. Pte Willis was the uncle of 3260A Sergeant Albert Edward Landaman MM who was killed in action in Belgium on 14 September 1917.
