Studio portrait of 73 Private (Pte) John Henry Crompton, 42nd Battalion, of Elimbah, Qld. He arrived in Australia from Lowthorpe, England, at the age of 38 and farmed in Queensland prior to enlisting in December 1915. Pte Crompton embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Borda (A30) on 5 June 1916. He was killed in action near the Thames Bunker, Zonnebeke, Belgium on 4 October 1917. Pte Compton was 41 years of age.
