Studio portrait of 504 Private (Pte) Oliver John Looney, 39th Battalion, of Amphitheatre, Vic. He was a school teacher prior to enlisting in March 1916, and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal before embarking from Melbourne on board HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 27 May 1916. He was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) in August 1916 and, after further training in England, arrived in France for service on the Western Front in November 1916. Cpl Looney was promoted to the rank of Sergeant (Sgt) in October 1917 and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) in 1919 "For very gallant conduct and devotion to duty" in France during the period April to September 1918. Sgt Looney DCM returned to Australia in November 1919.
