Studio portrait of 2194 Private (Pte) Raymond Llewellen Lassey, 53rd Battalion, of Neville, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting in March 1916, Pte Lassey embarked from Sydney with the 4th Reinforcements on board HMAT Vestalia (A44) on 11 July 1916. He arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 21 November 1916 and was transferred to the 19th Battalion on 3 December. Pte Lassey was killed in action at Hangard Wood, near Villers Bretonneux, France, on 7 April 1918. He was 27 years of age.
