Portrait of 816 Private (Pte) Stanley Clifford Cousens
Description
Informal portrait of 816 Private (Pte) Stanley Clifford Cousens, 15th Battalion, of Toowoomba, Qld. A farmer prior to enlisting in September 1914, Pte Cousens embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 22 December 1914. He served at Gallipoli from April to August 1915 when he was evacuated to England with influenza. Pte Cousens was promoted to the rank of Temporary Corporal in February 1916 and to Sergeant (Sgt) in April. He arrived in France in June and was killed in action at Pozieres on 9 August 1916. Sgt Cousens was 25 years of age. His brother 5322 Pte Sydney Leake Cousens, 26th Battalion, was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux on 8 August 1918, aged 33.
