Studio portrait of 4054 Private David Lindsay McAlister, 4th Battalion, of Mitta Mitta, NSW. A labourer prior to enlistment he embarked with the 12th Reinforcements on board HMAT Medic (A7) on 30 December 1915. He arrived at Alexandria on 7 January 1916 and, shortly thereafter, attached to the 15th Field Company Engineers at Tel-el-kebir. On 18 June of that year he was embarked at Alexandria on the Georgian and disembarked at Marseilles, France on 27 June 1916. McAlister was appointed the rank of Lance Corporal from 1 June 1916, promoted to Temporary 2nd Corporal on 19 August and to Corporal on 14 November 1916. The following year, he was given a furlough in England from 18 January and returned to his unit in France on 7 February. On 26 September 1917, he was killed in action. McAlister has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Belgium.
