Studio portrait of 5984 Private (Pte) John Henry Alexander Butters, 14th Battalion, of Lismore, Vic. Formerlly a labourer, Pte Butters enlisted on 3 April 1916 and as a member of the 19th Reinforcements, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Miltiades (A28) on 1 August 1916. He served on the Western Front where he was captured during the first battle of Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. He spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war and was repatriated to England on 21 December 1918. He returned to Australia on 22 April 1919.
