Studio portrait of 22047 Leading Seaman (Smn) Frank Dandridge Johnson, HMAS Perth, of Maroubra, NSW. Frank Johnson enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in May 1938. He served initially on HMAS Waterhen and from February 1939 on HMAS Canberra. In November 1940 he joined the crew of HMAS Perth and attained the rank of Leading Seaman in August 1941. HMAS Perth was sunk off the coast of Java on 1 March 1942 and SMN Johnson became a prisoner of war. He died on 12 September 1944 when the Japanese transport ship Rakuyo Maru was sunk off the south coast of China by USS Sealion. Smn Johnson was 23 years of age.
