Studio portrait of 1139 Private (Pte) Marmion Alexander Hay, 33rd Battalion, of Tingha, NSW. A miner prior to enlisting in January 1916, Pte Hay embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Marathon (A74) on 4 May 1916 and returned to Australia in 1919. Pte Hay was one of four brothers who enlisted: 1140 Pte James Alfred Hay, 33rd Battalion, was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 12 October 1917; 1138 Pte Albert Hay, 33rd Battalion, was killed in action at Messines, Belgium, on 26 July 1917, aged 24 years; 1735 Driver Lewis Hay MM, 10th Field Artillery Brigade, returned to Australia in 1919.
