Studio portrait of 1062 Private (Pte) Andrew Rose (right) and 858 Corporal (Cpl) James Roadknight, both of the 8th Battalion, who embarked together from Melbourne, Vic, on HMAT Benalla (A24) on 19 October 1914. A labourer from Dunolly, Vic, Pte Rose was killed in action on 25 April 1915, aged 31. He is buried at Lone Pine Cemetery, Anzac, Turkey. Cpl Roadknight of Bairnsdale, Vic, served at Gallipoli then France. In 1917 he transferred to the 37th Battalion and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He was killed in action in Belgium on 12 October 1917, aged 25.
