Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX39873 Sergeant Ian Uphill Mackintosh, Royal Australian Artillery 2/1 Heavy Battery unit, 2 Australian Infantry Force. Comprises a letter card and telegraphic message sent by Sgt Mackintosh to his wife Marjorie, whilst a prisoner of the Japanese in Java. He died at sea, presumed dead on 24 June 1944, when the Japanese POW Transport Ship, on which he was bound for Japan late in the war, was sunk by a United States submarine just outside Nagasaki Harbour.
