Informal portrait of Sister Essie Craig, Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS), 'taken the day Essie left'. Sister Craig, of Hawthorn, Victoria was 35 years old when she joined the AANS in October 1914. She departed Australia with the No.1 Australian General Hospital on HMAT Kyarra. She resigned from the AANS upon her marriage in July 1915 to Major Bernhard Trangott Zwar, Australian Army Medical Corps, returning to Australia in November that year.
