Collection relating to the Second World War service of Lieutenant Commander Arnold Beverley Smith, Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve. Collection consists of one photograph of Smith, 28 letters from Smith to his mother, sister and niece written between December 1939 and March 1945. Letters relate to personal and family matters, impressions of places and people, and general details of service, other sailors and actions in the South West Pacific Area.

Biographical information: born Toronto, Canada, 27 July 1901; attended Royal Naval College of Canada, initially of Halifax, Nova Scotia, eventually of Esquimalt, British Columbia, 1917-1920; joined Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve 1933; served on HMAS Swan from 3 September 1939 to 3 March 1940, HMAS Bathurst from 6 December 1940 to 19 February 1941, HMAS Platypus from 8 April 1941 to 25 May 1941, HMAS Melville from 26 May 1941 to 14 January 1943, HMAS Bangalow from 20 February 1943 to 16 June 1943, HMAS Basilisk from 27 July 1943 to 1 May 1944, and HMAS Launceston from September 1944; discharged 14 May 1945; died of illness 25 September 1946.
