Description

Studio portrait of two brothers from Melrose, SA, 6329 Private (Pte) Edgar Josiah Walter Slee (left), and 6330 Pte Francis Charles Henry Slee, both 16th Battalion. Farm labourers prior to enlisting together on 8 March 1916, the brothers embarked from Fremantle with the 20th Reinforcements on board HMAT Suffolk (A23) on 13 October 1916. They arrived in France on 29 December 1916. Pte Edgar Slee was captured at Riencourt, France, on 11 April 1917 and was interned as a prisoner of war at Limburg, Germany. He returned to Australia in 1919. Pte Francis Slee, aged 19, died on 11 June 1917 of wounds received in action in France.
