Studio portrait of 2038 (later 2038A) Private (Pte) David Leighton Blyton, 18th Battalion, of Eastern Creek, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting in July 1915, Pte Blyton embarked from Sydney with the 3rd Reinforcements on board HMAT Runic (A54) on 9 August 1915. He arrived at Gallipoli on 29 September 1915, was transferred to the 19th Battalion, and remained until the evacuation in December. Pte Blyton arrived in France on 25 March 1916 and was wounded in action in June. Appointed Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) on 10 February 1917, he was wounded in action for the second time three days later. L/Cpl Blyton died of his wounds on 14 February 1917, aged 33.
