Studio portrait of 23096 Gunner (Gnr) Henry Robert Norman Stevenson, 9th Field Artillery Brigade, of Brisbane, Qld. A public servant prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney, NSW with the 1st Reinforcements on board HMAT Argyllshire (A8) on 11 May 1916. Gnr Stevenson was taken on strength and transferred to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade in May 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal for duty on the night of the 18 September 1917, according to the recommendation 'This Gunner was at GUARD near HOOGE. He materially assisted in company with others in putting out fires in three gun pits, where the ammunition had been set on fire by hostile shelling, the Battery being under fire from the enemy at the time. As a result of this a large quantity of ammunition was saved which enabled the guns to be kept in action.' Gnr Stevenson returned to Australia on 23 July 1919.
