Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX2040 Corporal Ross Hamilton Smith, 2/4 Infantry Battalion. Collection consists of: a Palestine Office diary covering 1 January to 14 December 1940; a Field Diary covering 26 January to 1 May 1941; a C of A notebook; a Bible given to Cpl Smith by his Aunt Margaret with notes and inserts;postcard to Cpl Smith from unknown sender; postcard sent to Cpl Smith and his wife Nancy from F/Sgt A J Benson DFM, dated 20 May 1944; a newspaper clipping from the Inverell Times dated 15 July, 1986; 6 letters and one business card relating to Jolef Zappe, the German soldier who found the diary of Cpl Smith in Vienna; 12 letters and postcards written by Cpl Smith's brother Athol Smith, 10 addressed to Cpl Smith and one to the District Records Officer regarding two telegrams; 5 telegrams [including copies]; Inverell Returned Servicemen's Memorial Club Mortuary and Welfare Fund certificate; discharge papers; demobilization procedures booklet; Christmas card from Cpl Smith to his parents with pressed flowers inside; two Christmas cards from Cpl Smith to his brother Athol; 18 letters written to his friend 92601 Sgt June Moore, WAAF, and one to her brother Jeff; 50 letters written by Cpl Smith to miss Nancy Rowling, whom he married in 1942.
