Studio portrait of 609 Pte William Herbert McFarlane, 18th Battalion, of Strathfield, Sydney, NSW, son of William and Mary McFarlane. A shop assistant prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 25 May 1915. He was killed in action, on 19 November 1916, in France, on his way to the front line trench, aged 29. He is buried in the Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.
