Studio portrait of 5447 Pte Harold Edward Smith, 3rd (later 55th) Battalion, of Katoomba, NSW, son of Albert and Theresa H. Smith. A carpenter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 14 April 1916. He was killed in action on 9 August 1916 at Fleurbaix, France, aged 20. He is buried in the Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, France.
