Your duty ashore...his afloat
Description
United States Second World War recruitment poster issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. The design features a woman in U.S. Coast Guard military dress holding a pair of binoculars, with a sailor clutching a rifle in silhouette behind her. The poster encourages women to enlist in SPARS, the women's auxiliary unit of the U.S. Coast Guard in the Second World War.
Posters such as this were created to demonstrate the ways in which women could contribute to the war effort and emphasised the shared social imperative of home security ('Your Duty Ashore...His Afloat'). As with other women's forces, SPARS was created to release men from domestic service in order to fight overseas.
