Studio portrait of Battery Sergeant Major Edward Sem Whiting, Australian Field Artillery (left) and his son Private (Pte) Sem Henry Whiting, Australian Corps of Signallers (seated). A timber yard employee of Collingwood, Vic, Pte Whiting later enlisted in the 1st AIF, serving with the 6th Battalion, Headquarters. Given the service number 605, he embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Hororata (A20) on 19 October 1914. Whiting was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal (L Cpl) in January 1915. During fighting on Gallipoli L Cpl Whiting was wounded in the face and shoulder and was admitted to the Hospital Ship San Stefano Alexandria. He died from these wounds on 25 May 1915; he was 21 years of age. L Cpl Whiting is buried at the Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
