Studio portrait of 1266 Private (Pte) William Alexander Gibson, 4th Battalion, of Petersham, NSW. Formerly of Surrey, England, he had served five years with the British Army before arriving in Australia in 1912. Pte Gibson worked as a carpenter prior to enlisting in the AIF in October 1914, and embarked from Melbourne with the 1st Reinforcements on board HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 22 December 1914. Pte Gibson was killed in action at Shrapnel Gully, Gallipoli, on 3 May 1915. He was 26 years of age.
