History / Summary

Before refrigerators were widely available in the home, beaded covers were used to protect milk and other food stuffs from flies and insects. The covers were also used to protect liquids in jugs placed on tables. The beads around the edge were both decorative and functional as they weighed down the cover so it would not fall off the jug. The body of this jug cover is a commercially available, machine made piece of filet lace, with a hand made filet crochet beaded border.
