Studio portrait of two brothers and a friend prior to enlistment with the AIF. Identified from left: 2536 Private (Pte) Michael Joseph Breheny, 43rd Battalion, of Kalgoorlie, WA; 2545 Pte Peter Francis Breheny, 43rd Battalion of Lakeside, Woodlin, Boulder, WA; Jack Donnelly, (no further information known). Formerly a labourer, Michael Breheny enlisted on 7 August 1916 and as a member of the 5th Reinforcements he embarked from Fremantle, WA, aboard HMAT Argyleshire (A8) on 9 November 1916. He served on the Western Front where he was killed in action during the assault on the Hindenburg Line during the Battle of the St Quentin Canal on 29 September 1918. He was aged 36 years. Also a labourer, Peter Breheny enlisted on 21 September 1916 and as a member of the 5th Reinforcements he embarked with his brother from Fremantle, WA, aboard HMAT Argyleshire (A8) on 9 November 1916. He served on the Western Front, where he was killed in action at the third battle of Ypres during the assault on the Passchendaele Heights on 17 October 1917. He was aged 29 years.
