Studio portrait of Petty Officer (PO) Masao Tsuzuku, Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). During the attack on Sydney Harbour on 31 May 1942 PO Tsuzuku's submarine became grounded in Taylor's Bay, Mosman and could not be freed. PO Tsuzuku and his commanding officer, Lieutenant Keiu Matsuo committed suicide and their bodies were recovered by the RAN several days later. Cremated with full Naval Honours their ashes and those of other Japanese submariners killed in the raid were subsequently passed on to the Japanese authorities and returned to Japan.
