Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Rex Wilkinson Close, RANVR, of Bellerive, Tasmania. He was a draughtsman prior to enlisting in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in September 1940. A RAN crew member attached to British vessel HMS Hermes, Lt Close was one of 306 killed when it was sunk by Japanese aircraft off the coast of Ceylon on 9 April 1942. Lt Close was 28 years of age.
