Studio portrait of 2239 Private (Pte) Frank Rupert Smith, 45th Battalion, of Bega, NSW. A labourer prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydeny, NSW with the 4th Reinforcements on board HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 22 August 1916. Pte Smith served on the Western Front; he was killed in action on 7 June 1917. Pte smith has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
