Description
Informal portrait of 19508 Petty Officer (PO) William Lewis Aylott, HMAS Sydney, of McMahons Point, NSW, holding his children Bill and Dawn in his arms on a wharf at Circular Quay. HMAS Sydney II, in the background, had returned to Sydney the previous evening following service in the Mediterranean. PO Aylot and his son are draped in a Union Jack flag. PO Aylott has a tattoo of a butterfly on his left hand and is wearing an aluminium identification bracelet which was made on the ship. Originally from Devonport, England, he had enlisted in the RAN in 1930. PO Aylott was killed in action, aged 32, when HMAS Sydney II was sunk in the Indian Ocean by the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran on 20 November 1941.
