Studio portrait of two members of the 50th Battalion, AIF. Identified on the left is 3448 Private (Pte) Stanley Gordon Nancarrow from Wallaroo Mine, South Australia. He originally enlisted on 15 December 1915 but was taken ill and discharged medically unfit on 9 May 1916. He was a 22 year old bank clerk when he re-enlisted on 9 January 1917 and embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 10 February 1917 aboard HMAT Seang Bee. Following further training in England, he arrived in France in September 1917 to join the 50th Battalion. Pte Nancarrow was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, France on 25 April 1918 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux with others who have no known grave. Identified on the right is 3426 Pte Wilfred Henry Kelly from Pinnaroo, South Australia. He was a 21 year old clerk when he enlisted on 13 January 1917 and he embarked for overseas with Pte Nancarrow. After joining the 50th Battalion in France in September 1917, he was wounded in action on 18 October 1917. He re-joined the battalion on 11 March 1918 and was again wounded in action on 16 August 1918. This time he was evacuated to England for medical treatment and returned to Australia, arriving on 28 February 1919.
