Description

Studio portrait of 3211 Private (Pte) William Edmonds Olifent, 50th Battalion from Petersburg, South Australia. A 25 year old storekeeper prior to enlisting on 9 October 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 8th Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 16 December 1916 aboard HMAT Berrima. Following further training in England, he arrived in France and joined the 50th Battalion on 4 July 1917. Less than three months later, he was killed in action at Westhoek Ridge, Belgium on 27 September 1917. Pte Olifent is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
