Outdoor portrait of three Australian soldiers. Identified on the left is 2752 Private (Pte) Eric Reuben Wheaton, 50th Battalion from Plympton, South Australia. A 35 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 31 August 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 23 October 1916 aboard HMAT Port Melbourne. Following further training in England, he went to France where he joined the 50th Battalion on 13 May 1917. Less than a month later he was wounded in action at Messines, Belgium on 10 June 1917 and died the next day from his wounds. Pte Wheaton was buried in the Bailleul Community Cemetery Extension, France. The other two soldiers are unidentified.
