Studio portrait of 2036 Private Ralph Ashton Lindsay, 50th Battalion from Mallala, South Australia. A 20 year old farm labourer prior to enlisting on 4 May 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 3rd Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 13 July 1916 aboard HMAT Seang Bee. Following further training in England, he joined the 50th Battalion in France on 14 December 1916. He was taken ill and was in hospital in March 1918. After returning to the 50th Battalion on 5 April, he was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux on 25 April 1918. He was buried half a mile from Villers-Bretonneux, however, after the war his grave could not be located and he is now commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
