Description

Studio portrait of 4191 Corporal Frederick James Hisgrove, 50th Battalion AIF from Cheltenham Park, South Australia who had previously served in the 2nd Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse in the Boer War, leaving Port Adelaide on 20 February 1902 and arriving back in Adelaide on 31 July 1902. A 33 year old labourer prior to enlisting in the AIF on 2 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda. After arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and went with them to France in June 1916. He was killed in action near Pozieres, France on 16 August 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
