Description

Studio portrait of 3248 Private (Pte) John Blackie, 50th Battalion from Adelaide, South Australia sitting astride a chair and holding a cigarette. A 29 year old police constable prior to enlisting on 26 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 11th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla. After arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion on 29 February 1916 and went with them to France in June 1916. While serving in France, he was wounded on two occasions in August and September 1916. After the second wounding, he spent some time recovering in England and rejoined the 50th Battalion in Belgium in October 1917. Pte Blackie was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, France on 25 April 1918 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux with others who have no known grave.
