Description

Portrait of 3410 Private Henry Ernest Clifford Minerds, 50th Battalion from Mitcham, South Australia. A 24 year old chairmaker prior to enlisting on 28 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 11th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla. After arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion in February 1916 and proceeded to France in June 1916. He was promoted to Corporal on 14 August 1916, to Sergeant on 27 August 1916 and in November 1916 joined the Cadet Battalion in England for officer training. After being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 1 March 1916, he rejoined the 50th Battalion in Belgium on 11 July 1917 and was promoted to Lieutenant (Lt) on 29 July 1917. Lt Minerds was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 18 October 1917 and is buried in the White House Cemetery, St Jean-Les-Ypres, Belgium.
