Description

Outdoor portrait of two soldiers of the 50th Battalion AIF. Identified on the left is 3134A Private (Pte) Alfred James Bell from Quorn, South Australia. A 26 year old assayer prior to enlisting on 9 October 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 8th Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 16 December 1916 aboard HMAT Berrima. Following further training in England, he joined the 50th Battalion in Belgium on 15 July 1917 and was wounded in action on 26 August 1917. Pte Bell died from his wounds that same day and was buried in the Trois-Arbres Cemetery Steenwerck, near Armentieres, France. On the right is 3269 Pte Angus Cuthbert Lill from Maylands, South Australia. A 27 year old warehouseman prior to enlisting on 4 October 1916, he embarked for overseas with Pte Bell. Following further training in England, he joined the 50th Battalion in Belgium on 21 July 1917. On 23 August 1917 he was admitted to hospital with a sprained ankle and then in November 1917 he was evacuated to England with bronchitis. Pte Lill arrived back in Australia on 22 May 1918 and was discharged medically unfit for further service.
