Description

Studio portrait of 2257 Corporal (Cpl) Harry Burgan Slee, 50th Battalion from Wallaroo Mines, South Australia. A 19 year old school teacher prior to enlisting on 3 May 1916, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 5th Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat. Following further training in England, he arrived in France and joined the 50th Battalion on 15 April 1917. Five days later, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and on 1 August 1917 was promoted to Corporal. Also in August 1917, he was awarded a Military Medal for bravery. Cpl Slee was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, France on 25 April 1918 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux with others who have no known grave.
