Description

Portrait of 3659 Sergeant (Sgt) Ernest William Joyce, 50th Battalion from Adelaide, South Australia. A 35 year old painter prior to enlisting on 16 September 1916, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 10th Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Melbourne on 4 August 1917 aboard HMAT Themistocles. Following further training in England, he arrived in France and joined the 50th Battalion on 22 April 1918. After being promoted to Corporal in May 1918 and to Sergeant in July 1918, he was taken ill and admitted to hospital on 21 October 1918. The next day he died from pneumonia. Sgt Joyce was originally buried in the Dury Hospital Military Cemetery, France but in 1928 was moved to the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, France.
