Studio portrait of the Shadgett brothers from Parkside, South Australia. On the left is 3275 Private (Pte) Kenneth Pettit Shadgett who was an 18 year old driver prior to enlisting on 13 July 1915. On the right is his older brother, 3473 Pte Alan George Shadgett who was a 22 year old motor-body builder prior to enlisting on 28 July 1915. Both brothers embarked for overseas with the 11th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla. Shortly after arriving in Egypt, they transferred to the 50th Battalion and went with them to France in June 1916. Kenneth was captured by the Germans at Noreuil, France on 2 April 1917 and held as a prisoner of war in Germany until repatriated to England in December 1918. After marrying Christina in Scotland on 27 January 1919, he and his new wife arrived back in Australia on 3 February 1920. On the day that Kenneth was captured, Alan was killed in action, also at Noreuil and buried in the Noreuil Australian Cemetery, France. A younger brother, 3369 Pte Frank James Shadgett enlisted in November 1917, also served in the 50th Battalion and returned to Australia in January 1919.
