Portrait of 431 Private (Pte) Ernest Dawes, 50th Battalion from Prospect, South Australia. A 21 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 24 August 1914, he embarked for overseas with G Company of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius. The 10th Battalion was the first ashore at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1914 and Pte Dawes was wounded in action on that first day. He was evacuated to Egypt for medical treatment and returned to Gallipoli on 30 July 1915. On 7 September he was taken ill and again evacuated to Egypt only to return to Gallipoli on 28 November 1915. After the evacuation of Gallipoli, Pte Dawes transferred to the 50th Battalion in Egypt and went with them to France in June 1916. He was killed in action on 13 August 1916 and buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery, France. However, after the war, his grave could not be located and was not found again until 1937 when his body was identified and relocated to the London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, France.
