Portrait of 3971 Private (Pte) Harold Charles Wood, 50th Battalion from North Adelaide, South Australia. A 36 year old railway shunter prior to enlisting on 11 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 2 December 1915 aboard RMS Malwa. While undergoing further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and went with them to France in June 1916. Pte Wood was killed in action on 16 August 1916 and buried at Mouquet Farm, France, however, after the war, his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
