Description
Portrait of 2973 Private (Pte) James Russell, 50th Battalion from North Adelaide, South Australia. A 26 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 22 February 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 7th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 6 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric. Following further training in England, he arrived in France and joined the 50th Battalion in April 1917. After being wounded in action at Villers-Bretonneux, France on 26 April 1918, he received medical treatment and re-joined the battalion four months later. Pte Russell was killed in a train crash on 5 December 1918 and buried in the Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
