Portrait of 51896 Private (Pte) Charles John Kennewell, 57th Battalion from Gawler East, South Australia. An 18 year old mason prior to enlisting on 10 November 1917, he embarked for overseas with the First South Australian Reinforcements sailing from Sydney on 1 May 1918 aboard HMAT Euripides. While undergoing further training in England, he was allotted to the 50th Battalion and after arriving in France transferred to the 57th Battalion. Pte Kennewell died of pneumonia at the 3rd Australian General Hospital at Abbeville, France on 22 November 1918 and was buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension.
