Description

Portrait of 4245 Private (Pte) John Edward Painter, 50th Battalion from Norwood, South Australia. A 37 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 30 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda. While undergoing further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and went with them to France in June 1916. Pte Painter was killed in action on 16 August 1916 and buried at Mouquet Farm, France. In 1930 his body was exhumed and reburied in Serre Road Cemetery No 2, France during a program by the Imperial War Graves Commission to remove scattered graves and cemeteries in places unsuitable for permanent retention.
