Studio portrait of three members of the Clift family from Jamestown, South Australia. From left to right are 3786 Private (Pte) Harold Roy Clift, a 27 year old miner (sitting), his brother 3788 Pte Clarence Alfred Clift, a 21 year old carpenter (standing) and their uncle 3787 Pte Walter John Clift, a 36 year old pipe fitter.
All three men enlisted on 17 September 1915 and embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements of the 27th Battalion from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades. While undergoing further training in Egypt, Harold was promoted to Lance Corporal and then all three transferred to the 50th Battalion and went to France in June 1916. On 16 August 1916 at Mouquet Farm, France, Harold was severely wounded in action and Clarence and Walter were killed in action. Harold was evacuated to England for medical treatment and then returned to Australia arriving on 21 September 1917 and was subsequently discharged as medically unfit for further service. Clarence and Walter are both commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
