Description

Portrait of 348 Company Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS) Denis Robert Jones, 50th Battalion from Kilkenny, South Australia. A 22 year old salesman prior to enlisting on 19 August 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Private with F Company, 10th Infantry Battalion from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius. While serving with the 10th Battalion at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and then to Corporal. He was later awarded a Military Medal for his great devotion to duty during the landing at Gallipoli. Back in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and was promoted to CQMS prior to embarking for France in June 1916. After being wounded in action in August 1916, he was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the field and was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, France on 3 September 1916. 2nd Lt Jones is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
