Description

Portrait of Lance Corporal (L Cpl) John Stewart Brakenridge, 50th Battalion from Port Pirie, South Australia. A 30 year old barman prior to enlisting on 9 November 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 15th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 9 March 1916 aboard RMS Mongolia. After joining the 50th Battalion in France in August 1916, he was promoted to Lance Corporal in March 1917 and then killed in action at Noreuil, France on 2 April 1917. L Cpl Brakenridge is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. His 21 year old brother, 4738 Private Hamilton James Brakenridge enlisted on the same day and in the same battalion but he survived and returned to Australia on 6 August 1919.
