Portrait of 1671 Private (Pte) William John Egan, 50th Battalion from Adelaide, South Australia. A 23 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 11 March 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements from Adelaide aboard HMAT Aeneas on 11 April 1916. Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France in June 1916 and was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 16 August 1916. Pte Egan is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
