Portrait of 4280 Private (Pte) Norman Langley Surman, 10th Battalion. A draper from North Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda (A30) for Egypt. On 26 February 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France during June 1916. Pte Surman was initially reported missing in action at Mouquet Farm on 16 August 1916. Subsequently, he was confirmed as being killed in action on that date. Pte Surman has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 19 years.
