Portrait of 2985 Sergeant (Sgt) Roy Harwood Clark, 50th Battalion from Prospect, South Australia. A 20 year old Methodist home missionary and member of the Militia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 27 May 1915, he embarked for overseas as an Acting Corporal with the 9th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 21 September 1915 aboard HMAT Star of England. After joining the 10th Battalion at Gallipoli in November 1915, he transferred to the 50th Battalion in Egypt in February and was promoted to Corporal in March 1916. While serving in France, he was wounded in action near Mouquet Farm on 13 August 1916 but returned to the battalion the next day. He was promoted to Sergeant in October 1916 and during 1917 spent five months in England with the 13th Australian Training Battalion. After returning to the 50th Battalion in France in December 1917, he was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux on 25 April 1918. Sgt Clark is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
